Tattoo Removal FAQs

What should I do before treatment and is there anything I should avoid?

Prior to your treatment, we will schedule a consult to assess the tattoo removal and discuss any current medications you are taking. You should avoid tanning or using sunless tanner for approximately two weeks prior to treatment, and wear sunblock when outside.

Avoid using Retin-A, Retinols, and AHAs, as well as certain other topical skin medications, and avoid blood thinners such as ibuprofen, alcohol, aspirin, fish oil, omegas, Vitamin D3, and Vitamin E.

Your primary care provider should always be consulted before stopping any medications.

How does it work?

The exact number of laser treatments needed varies depending on the size, age, depth, and complexity of the tattoo. Homemade or amateur tattoos respond more quickly to treatment than professional tattoos. Some amateur tattoos can often be removed in as few as 1 or 2 treatments, while professional tattoos may take 6 – 10 or more treatments to achieve maximum results. Laser removal is usually performed in intervals spaced at least 8-12 weeks apart to allow the area to heal between treatments. Immediately following treatment, the laser treated skin will look white. This is soon replaced by redness and then scabbing. It is important to keep the treated area moist and protected from the sun as it heals.

Who is a good candidate?

Individuals with fair skin and superficially placed tattoos on the arms, chest, buttocks or legs are the best candidates. Tattoos on dark skinned individuals, or tattoos on the ankles or fingers, areas where there is less body fat, are the most difficult to treat and results are more variable.

During your initial consultation our medical asethetics techs will determine the potential success rate of laser tattoo removal for any given tattoo and skin type.

What to To Expect During Your Treatment

The lasers generate rapid pulses which may feel different to each patient, but are generally uncomfortable. Topical numbing cream will be applied for about 40 minutes prior to treatment. We recommend taking an over the counter Tylenol or Ibuprofin 1 hour prior to your session.

Treatment time is usually less than an hour. Depending on the size of the tattoo and the number of colors (multicolor tattoos require multiple passes), the majority of treatments are completed in less than an hour in total for your visit.

What should I expect post treatment and what should I do for aftercare?

The treated tattoo takes 7 to 10 days to heal much like a tattoo. The inked area will be slightly raised and the area around the tattoo in a little red-ish and warm. Much like sunburn. With higher energies you can expect some local swelling, small fluid filled blisters and small amounts of bleeding or scab. Over the next days the area will settle down and return to its original appearance. Any small "burn" blisters will heal and resolve exactly as burn blisters heal. The underlying skin will heal and return to normal. There is very little risk of scarring from this laser procedure. Gradually, over the next 8 weeks, the ink will slowly fade away as your normal skin cells take away the bits of ink and the tattoo lightens.

During laser treatment, your tattoo may turn white briefly. It then swells somewhat and may turn red, but this usually lasts only a few hours. A healing ointment and a dressing will be applied to the area immediately after treatment. Occasionally, there will be pinpoint bleeding associated with the treatment. The treated area should be kept clean. Follow the aftercare instructions exactly as to what to do during the days following the procedure. A shower can be taken the next day, although the treated area should never be scrubbed. If a scab forms it is vital that you do not pick it or scratch it.

Between your treatments, it is important to keep the tattoo covered from the sun to prevent hyper-pigmentation (darkening). You will receive detailed instructions during your appointment.

How Many Treatments Do I Need?

The exact number of laser treatments needed varies depending on the size, age, depth, and complexity of the tattoo. Homemade or amateur tattoos respond more quickly to treatment than professional tattoos.

Some amateur tattoos and superficial deposits such as microblading can often be removed in as few as 1 or 2 treatments, while professional tattoos may take 4-6  treatments to achieve maximum results. Deeper set deposited inks may take longer.

Laser removal is usually performed in intervals spaced at least 8-12 weeks apart to allow the area to heal between treatments. We recommend waiting the 12 weeks between treatments to allow your body to process the tattoo particles effectively.

Are there any side effects?

Side effects are generally few but may include hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation. Infection and permanent scarring are possible but rare. There may be some redness that will resolve over time. You should inform our medical aesthetician if you have a tendency to form abnormal scars or keloids, prior to starting laser treatments for contraindications information.
