Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) Rosemary is one of the earliest known plants used as a medicine and as a food. It has a very long list of actions (effects of the plant) and it also has many active constituents. Some of the most commonly known actions are as an antiseptic, an antibacterial, and an antimicrobial. In addition, one of its constituents (several different types of pinene) are well known for their effects as a nervine, so it is commonly used for anxiety, depression, as well as a tonic for nervous exhaustion. It is also listed as a stimulant for the cerebral cortex (as well as circulatory and adrenal systems) so it is often used to stimulate the brain, helping to sharpen focus and attentiveness.
